Meet Alejandro

A first-generation college student, majoring in biology at the University of St. Thomas in Houston. He has been involved in campus ministry for three years and is a founding student member of EchelonUSA.

Alejandro, a junior biology major at the University of St. Thomas in Houston.

Why Echelon USA?

“As a Latino student, I find it difficult to balance family and school.  Latino culture is family oriented and sometimes it becomes hard to prioritize. As a first generation, Mexican-American college student, I believe joining a club like EchelonUSA will give me a step up after college. It is not just for Latino students whose parents already have successful careers; it is meant to equip Latino students from all backgrounds.

What do you hope to gain from EchelonUSA?

I hope to gain connections with professionals and other young people in the organization, as well as the skills necessary to be a successful Catholic, Latino leader in the future. My goal is that I will become a role model on campus for students either as a Latino, as a Catholic, or both.

Who inspires you in your Catholic faith?

Thomas Merton, the late writer, mystic and Catholic monk. He once wrote as a prayer to God: “I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope that I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.” This has become a source of inspiration for me as I prepare for a life of devout faith.
